Axcient is pleased to announce the implementation of the Cloud Key Management (CKMS) data encryption enhancement for the Business Recovery Cloud (BRC).

What is cloud key management?

CKMS provides the industry’s most advanced BDR at-rest encryption, allowing partners to instantly revoke encryption keys in the event of physical theft or a network compromise, rendering data unusable at the push of a button. Encryption keys are never stored locally, and every cloud key accessed in the cloud is retained forever in a partner visible audit log for compliance.

What needs to be done to take advantage of this feature?

First, you can purchase or lease the new BRC hardware. The new hardware is provisioned with the encrypted disks protected by CKMS.

Alternatively, if you are an existing BRC customer, your appliances must be reinstalled with AxOS 7.0.0 or later. There are multiple ways to restore backup data onto your appliance after the fresh OS install. Discuss your options with Axcient Support.

Any limitations or prerequisites?

For security reasons, the decryption key is not stored locally. Instead, the appliance will attempt to acquire the key during the boot-up process. For this reason, you must connect the appliance to the Internet before it is powered on.

In the event that the Internet is not accessible, you must contact Axcient Support to acquire a temporary key to unlock the appliance.
