Symptoms

In the backup log, you see informational messages similar to:

  • INFO: 0x30000: Protected storage could not be restored: Key not valid for use in specified state. [-2146893813 (0x8009000B)] {eFS:Crypto-AES:781}

Known Causes and Resolutions

“Protected storage” is a windows technology that allows encrypting data with the current windows' user's password. It's used to encrypt any credentials you enter in the folder properties for a folder for the network logon credentials. Basically, it is referring to how some of the properties in the software settings are saved to the system.

To resolve:
The saving process of backup options and properties will normally respond to any changes in user permissions automatically, but there are rare cases where events within the domain or on the computer will force a need to refresh the "save" manually. The recommendation for this message is to go into the backup software > Folders panel > select AE Jobs > click the Properties button (all destinations if it asks) > click Save.
