Backup for Files - Backups fail with SSL certificate errors

Symptoms

Backups fail with one of the following errors:

  • SSL routines: SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE: certificate verify failed
  • SSL routines: SSL3_READ_BYTES: tlsv1 alert unknown ca
  • SSL routines: SSL3_READ_BYTES: sslv3 alert certificate expired

Alternatively, when you try to test the connection or connect in the file manager, you get an error message that the server is not a valid online backup server.

Resolution

The software must be upgraded to a version higher than 3.7.0. Use the software updates tab on the system status page in the backup manager to update the software. If your software is configured to update automatically, it should update within 24 hours. If you are using the Linux or OSX version, download the latest version and install it using the install.sh script (it will upgrade your existing installation).
